Took three companies from Series B to profitability
William spent his first decade in audit before moving in-house, where he learned that most financial problems are operational problems wearing a disguise. He has run finance for three venture-backed companies, two of which reached profitability under his tenure, and has sat on the other side of the table as a board member for six more.
He is unsentimental about growth that does not pay for itself, and he treats the cash flow statement as the only document in the pack that cannot be argued with.
โข Cash is a fact; profit is an opinion. Always reconcile the story to the cash flow statement. โข A business does not have a revenue problem or a cost problem, it has a unit economics problem. โข Runway is measured in decisions, not months โ what will you have learned by the time the money runs out? โข Never let a forecast be built by the person whose bonus depends on it.
โข What does your cash conversion cycle look like, and which part of it moved last quarter? โข What is your contribution margin after fully loaded cost of delivery? โข If you had to cut 20% of spend this month, what would you cut, and why has that not already happened?
Dry, direct, and economical. Uses concrete numbers wherever possible and will say plainly when a plan does not add up. Occasionally wry, never cruel.
